Beroe wins in Bar after a great comeback in the final minutes
BC Beroe recorded its first win in the Second Stage of SIGAL-UNIQA Balkan League. The team from Stara Zagora completed a great comeback and defeated KK Mornar 80-76 away. The visitors played very good in the fourth quarter when they took the lead for the first time in the game and managed to steal the victory after a drama in the final seconds. This result gives both teams 1-1 record after two rounds in group C. Next week Mornar will visit KK Teodo while on 23rd Beroe will hosts Bashkimi.
Mornar had a great start by scoring the first 11 points in the game. Then the hosts continued to have the lead but Beroe responded wit 11-1 run to cut it to 1. Mornar still didn′t let the lead slip away and were up by 5 after ten minutes. It was in that range for the whole second quarter but after Beroe finished it better the difference went down to only a point.
Shortly after the middle of the third quarter Mornar increased its advantage to 11. Beroe again responded well and cut the deficit to 5 points and missed some chances. Mornar took advantage from that and went on a 6-0 run to restore its lead of 11. Austan Barnes responded with triple but a tip-in for the hosts gave them 10-points lead after 30 minutes. The visitors didn′t give up and thanks to good defense managed to cut the deficit to only 3 points with four minutes to go. With 2.25 to play Barnes scored and the margin was cut to only a single point and with 1.46 to go Evrik Gary scored a triple to put Beroe up by 1. Mornar tied score in the next offense and then both sides missed. After that with 44 seconds to play Gary was fouled and made both free throws to put his team up by 2. Then Lamont Jones missed for the hosts and Barnes was fouled. He also made both free throws and the visitors took a 4-point lead with 26.1 seconds to go. Calic scored immediatelly after the timeout and then Barnes made an offensive foul. That gave the hosts a new chance and Calic was fouled with 6.6 seconds before the buzzer. However he missed them both, Tihomir Zhelev took the rebound, was fouled and scored twice from the line to give his team the win.
The visitors scored 12 triples from 19 attempts compared to 7 of 21 for the hosts which gave Beroe a big advantage.
Auston Barnes had a great game for the winners with 20 points and 13 rebounds. Evrik Gary also played well with 15 and 8 as Ashton Moore scored 10 points.
Lamont Jones was the top scorer for the home side with 20 points as Marko Mijovic added 12.
