9 of 12 teams that will take part in the BIBL are already known. Here is a brief club history for each one.

Levski

 

Levski is the most popular club in Bulgaria and has become well known as “the team of the people” with the biggest fan support around the country. All researches in Bulgaria say 2/3 from the fans in the country support Levski.

 

Basketball club Levski was officially registered back in 1923 and so far has won 17 times the championship of the country and 12 times the Cup of Bulgaria. Levski participated many times in the past in European tournaments such as the Champions Cup and Radivoj Korac Cup. Levski played its first games in European competition back in 1962 when they lost to CSKA Moscow in the first round of FIBA Cup. Five years later they won for the first time in Europe with two defeats of Austrian team Union Babenberg from Vienna.

 

BC Levski reached the 1/8-finals of Korac Cup in the 2000/2001 season when they lost to Fenerbahce. Their latest participation in Europe was back in season 2002/2003 when they were part of FIBA Champions Cup.

 

Levski finished third last season after overcoming the rivalry of Spartak Pleven for the bronze medals in the Bulgarian championship. “The Blues” with their young and talented squad were second after the Regular season with a record of 22 wins and 10 losses.


Cherno More Eurohold

 

BC Cherno More Varna is known as a “workshop” for basketball talent and since last season added Eurohold to its name. The team finished sixth after the regular season in Bulgaria with a record of 15 wins and 17 losses and later lost to Spartak Pleven in the quarterfinals of the Bulgarian playoffs. However back in March they played very well in the Cup of Bulgaria, only losing to Lukoil Academic in the final.

 

The bosses of the club signed with a new coach for next season – young specialist Daniel Dimitrov will lead the team. Cherno More is 3 times champion of Bulgaria (1985 as Academic Varna, 1998 and 1999) and has won 3 Bulgarian Cup. The team participated 11 times in Korac Cup and Saporta Cup. Back in the 1975/76 season they made their debut in Korac Cup, eliminating Turkish team Karsiyaka Izmir. Later in the group stage Cherno More lost to Virtus Bologna and Partizan Belgrade.

 

During participation in Europe, Cherno More had successes over teams such as Besiktas Istanbul, AEL Limassol, Spirou Charleroi, Autodorozhnik Saratov, Vitrus Roma, Bnei Hertzeliya and Palacanestro Varese.

 

The first player from an Eastern bloc country to compete in the NBA came from this club. Georgi Glouchkov was selected by Phoenix Suns in the 1985 NBA Draft. Todor Stoykov is another player coming from Cherno More. He is one of the best players in recent basketball history in the country. Stoykov is the leading scorer in ULEB Cup while playing for Lukoil Academic.

 

The team from Varna relies mostly on its own young and talented players but also had two Americans and a Lithuanian player during the last season.

Mega Aqua Monta Belgrade

The club was founded back in 1998, by a group of basketball enthusiasts in the factory Avala Ada. In the spring of 1999 they won in the regional league in Serbian capital Belgrade. That allowed them to get in the Second Serbian League. A season later they wanted to find a place one level above and successfully moved up in the First Serbian League. Two seasons in a row they finished third in that league.  After playoffs in Novi Becej in 2002/03 they qualified for First B League of Serbia and ended up third in the standings a year later.

 

Thanks to the great help of the well known Beobasket agency, which took the management of the team in 2004/2005 season, they reached the biggest success of this young club after finishing second in the competition of Serbian First B League. That was enough to advance in YUBA League, which is the highest level of club competition in Serbia. From December 19 2005 the club changed its name and was called Mega Basket. At the same time the club signed a very important sponsorship agreement with Company Ishrana Smederevo and during the 2005/2006 season the team was officially named Mega Ishrana, while over the last year the name of the club was Mega Aqua Monta. They finished second in the first stage of the Superleague with a winning record – 12-10.

 

The team is well known for giving opportunities to very young players, coming from one of the best basketball European schools – the Serbian – to show their talent.

Swisslion Takovo Vrsac
 

Swisslion from Takovo was Registered on April 4, 1994 in Vrsac, when group of enthusiasts built a basketball club in the town. With the development of one of the leaders in food industry in Serbia – the Swisslion Takovo concern, their basketball club rose as well. Since the 2001 season and the promotion into the First Serbian League the club received a new name in Lions, same as the chain of sweetshops around the country.

 

Vrsac is a big basketball center and since EuroBasket 2005, which took place in Serbia, they got the name of “City of basketball”. Besides well known Hemofarm, Vrsac recognized another team playing with the best in Serbia - Swisslion Takovo.

 

Last season Swisslion Takovo reached the final stage of the Superleague but ended up with a record of 4 wins and 10 losses, not enough to make the playoffs.

 

Swisslion Takovo has big ambitions for next season. The team will participate in Serbian A League as well as the opening season of the Balkan basketball league. In 2007/2008 Swisslion had the best season in their 14 years history. They qualified for the final tournament of the Serbian Cup in Nis and ended sixth in the Swisslion Serbian Superleague. The club reached an agreement with head coach Dejan Mijatovic to extend his contact for one more year.

KK Fersped Rabotnicki Skopije
 

KK Rabotnicki Skopije was founded back in 1946. Since then the club tried to get among the best in the Yugoslavian League. The success came up in 1953 when Rabotnicki played in the First East League of the country.  In 1957 the club finished third in the junior category, which later in 1964 once again found place in best Yugoslavian Leagie. From 1965 to the break up of Yugoslavia Rabotnicki always played in the First Division in the country.

 

After Yugoslavia fell apart Rabotnicki continued to play in the local republican league. Rabotnicki had the most number of players reflected on the development of basketball game in FYR of Macedonia and they brought great successes for Rabotnicki with their play.

 

KK Fersped Rabotnicki has won 12 titles between 1993 and 2006. The club took the Macedonian Cup twice. This season (2007/2008) with head coach Marin Dokuzovski the team finished 4th after the regular season in FYR of Macedonia with a 17-13 record and later lost at the semifinals of the playoffs against Feni Industries. Rabotnicki played 11 times in Europe since 1975 when they debuted in Saporta Cup. Back in 2004 they were part of FIBA Europe Cup South Conference and reached the Final, where they lost to Tuborg Izmir 78-80. The last time they played in Europe was in season 2004/05, when they couldn’t qualify from group A of FIBA Eurocup.

 

Feni Industries

 

Feni Industries have already won the National Cup of the country and are now playing in the final of F.Y.R of Macedonia versus Strumica 2005. The club finished first at the end of the regular season with 26 wins from 30 games. The club was formed in 2005 under current name Feni Industries. The very next season they reached the quarterfinal of the Macedonian Cup. The main sponsor of the club is the biggest and only Ferro Nickel producer, Feni Industries. Within the activities of the club, they manage a free of charge youth basketball academy. In the 2005/2006 season they played in the Second division and ended up second in the table. Feni Industries took the 6th place in the First division of the championship of the country in the 2006/2007 season and the same year they reached the quarterfinals of the Macedonian Cup. The biggest success came earlier this year when they won the Cup of FYR of Macedonia in dramatic fashion. Emil Rajkovic is the head coach of the team.


Strumica 2005

Strumica 2005 is the champion of FYR of Macedonia for 2007 and was finalist for the Macedonian Cup. The club had different names in the past related to the sponsors of the team - Makedonija`91 Deksim, Tabak, Mak 91 Polo Trade.

 

The club is currently playing in the final of the domestic championship against Feni Industries. The team finished second after regular season with a record of 22 wins and 8 losses.

 

Back in 1993/94 Strumica played in the Korac Cup. In the qualification round they were outplayed by Ukrainian team Kharkov but registered their first win in Europe. In the 1997/98 season Tabak Strumica reached the group stage of the same Korac Cup. The team of Strumica mostly relies on experienced domestic players but also has two Serbians in their current roster.


Dinamo Bucharest

 

One of the most popular basketball clubs in the Romania, Dinamo Bucharest is a multiple national champion and winner of the Cup in the country. The last time they were champions of Romania was back in 2003 and after that they were finalists in the domestic championship for two years in a row – 2004 and 2005. The club finished seventh at the end of the regular season this year and later lost to CSU Sibiu in the first round (quarterfinals) of the playoffs. This is a little set back after they had twice in a row reached the semifinal stage of the Romanian playoffs.

 

Dinamo made their debut in European competition back in 1965/66 season when they eliminated Fenerbahce in the qualification round, but eventually lost to Zadar in the later stages of the tournament. They have participated in FIBA tournaments 19 times so far. The biggest success was back in the 1972/73 season when Dinamo got through the first two rounds of the Champions Cup by defeating Honka from Finland and Academic from Sofia. They reached the group stage and met teams such as CSKA Moscow, Pallacanestro Varese and USK Prague.

 

The last participation of Dinamo in FIBA tournament was back in the 2004/05 season when they won the preliminary group and left behind two Cypriot teams – Apoel Nicosia and Enad Nicosia. However in the playoffs later they lost twice to Apollon Limassol.

 

The current head coach of the team is Romanian legend Alexandru Vinereanu, who played for the national team of the country for 13 years. He started in Dinamo as a coach assistant back in 1998, but three years ago took the head coaching position in the club. With his height of 209 he is still the tallest person in the club. However his team is mixed with veteran and very experienced players with some young talents from the junior club.

 

One of the best players is Carlos Morban from the Dominican Republic, who already has a reputation for his successful career in other Balkan countries – Bulgaria, FYR of Macedonia and Turkey.

Rapid Bucharest
 
Rapid Bucharest reached the semifinals in the Romanian championship playoffs this season, but lost to defending champion CSU Ploesti. Earlier this season Rapid finished fifth after the regular season with 16 wins and 10 losses. The club got its current name Rapid Neoset last year. Their best placement in recent years was the seventh position back in 2001.

 Back in the 1983/84 season Rapid Bucharest played in the Korac Cup but lost in the qualification round to Israeli team Maccabi Ramat Gan twice. The coach of the team is Bosnian Mladen Ostojic, who has an interesting biography. He was assistant coach of Greek powerhouse Olympiacos back in 2001 and 2002 and also coached in Serbia, Cyprus and Israel. He brought some quality players from the region and absolutely deserved a place in the semifinals of the Romanian playoffs.
